Join us for an inside look at three San Francisco artists’ studios and a tour of Recology, San Francisco’s waste disposal site, which features a unique artists’ residency program. In keeping with the eco-art theme, the artists we have selected incorporate recycled materials in their works.
At our first stop, Recology, we will have a discussion about recycling and sustainability, learn about the artist-in-residency program, meet the current artists in the program Val Britton and Zachary Scholz, view the Household Hazard Waste Facility, make an unforgettable visit to the transfer station, and walk through the sculpture garden. Northern California WCA’s member, the late Jo Hanson, was a guiding force for this program. To learn more about Jo Hanson, visit http://sunsetscavenger.com/AIR/joHanson.htm. To learn more about Recology Artist-in-Residence program, visit http://sunsetscavenger.com/AIR/index.htm.
Our next stop is the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Artists’ Colony, the largest group studio in San Francisco where 250 artists work. There, we will enjoy a box lunch and meet two artists, Marc Ellen Hamel (http://www.marcellenhamel.net/) and Dolores Gray (http://web.me.com/doloresrgray/DRGRAY/HOME.html). Marc Ellen’s talk will contrast her process when working with recycled materials and when painting. Dolores, a wonderful story-teller, will reveal the stories that reside in her assemblage boxes. Marc Ellen will also discuss the history of Hunters Point while leading a walking tour.
Our third stop is Lizland, artist Liz Mamorsky’s wonderful studio in SOMA (South of Market). Liz will give a tour of her studio and discuss her works. Be sure to walk up her spiral staircase! For more information, visit http://www.lizland.com/TourGalleries.html.
Our last stop is Arc Studios & Gallery, just around the corner from Lizland. There we will enjoy some wine and wind down the tour. If you are in the mood for more art, SF MOMA and many downtown galleries are within walking distance and stay open late on Thursday evenings.
